I remember when I attended elementary school, blooming Magnolia and Crabapple trees filled the air with wonderful floral smells in late May or early June and marked the start of the summer vacation. April snow days were not unusual, and planting season started on Memorial Day when the last real risk of a night frost had passed. Those were the days when April showers brought May flowers. Today in Michigan, temperatures are in the high 80's by early May and March snow days are rare. Warm Spring temperatures bring out tree blossoms, tulips and daffodils almost a month early now. Tree blooms only last a week as early Spring storms and wind sweep in and take the pedals down within a week's time.
Spring 2013
I took this picture of our Coralburst Crabapple tree in full bloom this year on May 9th, and in less than a week, the flowers have fallen and there is a frost warning for tonight. Weather patterns have changed so much over the last 40 years and have had such an influence on plants and living things around us. If we can just take the time to observe and comprehend these changes we could realize that climate change is indeed around us.
